Soft Soap Base for Phenyl Manufacturing – Complete 1 KG Process

A properly prepared soap base plays an important role in traditional phenyl manufacturing. In this process, Castor Oil is saponified with Caustic Soda (NaOH) to prepare a soap base that can subsequently be used in phenyl formulations.

Technical note: Because NaOH is used here, the resulting material is technically a sodium castor-oil soap. The term “soft soap” is commonly used in the market for such soap bases, although true soft soap generally refers to potassium soaps.

Water Distribution

  • 150 g Water → For Caustic Soda Solution
  • 400 g Water → For Main Batch
  • Total Water = 550 g

🏭 COMPLETE MANUFACTURING PROCESS

STEP 1 — Preparation of Caustic Soda Solution

Take a clean, heat-resistant container.

Add:

50 g Caustic Soda (NaOH)

Slowly add:

150 g Water

Mix carefully until the Caustic Soda is completely dissolved.

The solution will generate considerable heat during dissolution. After complete dissolution, keep the solution aside for approximately 30 minutes to cool.

⚠️ Safety

Always add Caustic Soda to Water, never water to solid Caustic Soda.

Wear chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles and protective clothing.


STEP 2 — Prepare the Main Batch

Take a suitable stainless-steel or chemically compatible vessel.

Add:

400 g Water

Place the vessel on the heating source.

Maintain LOW HEAT.

Now slowly add the previously prepared 150 g Caustic Soda Solution into the 400 g water while continuously stirring.

Mix properly so that the solution becomes uniform.


STEP 3 — Add Castor Oil

Now start adding:

400 g Castor Oil

Add the Castor Oil slowly and gradually while continuously stirring.

Do not add the entire quantity at once.

Maintain low heat and continue slow, uniform stirring throughout the addition.


STEP 4 — Saponification / Soap Formation

Continue heating on low flame while stirring continuously.

Initially, the mixture may appear milky or cloudy.

As the reaction progresses, the mixture should become more uniform and gradually clearer.

Continue the process until the batch reaches a uniform, clear/transparent soap-base appearance.

The actual processing time can vary depending on the quality of Castor Oil, NaOH concentration, temperature and mixing efficiency. Therefore, do not rely only on a fixed heating time.


STEP 5 — Cooling & Resting

Once the desired uniform/transparent soap-base appearance is achieved:

  1. Turn off the heat.
  2. Stop heating.
  3. Allow the material to cool.
  4. Keep the batch undisturbed for 3–4 hours.

This resting period allows the soap base to stabilize and helps entrapped air and any settled material separate.


✅ FINAL SOAP BASE

After the resting period, the prepared Castor Oil Soap Base is ready to be used as a component in phenyl manufacturing.

400 g Water in Main Vessel

Add NaOH Solution

Low Heat + Stirring

Slowly Add 400 g Castor Oil

Continuous Mixing & Low Heating

Uniform/Clear Soap Base

Rest for 3–4 Hours

💰 APPROXIMATE RAW MATERIAL COST

Using your current raw-material rates:

Castor Oil: ₹260/kg
400 g = ₹104.00

Caustic Soda: ₹90/kg
50 g = ₹4.50

Total:

₹104 + ₹4.50 = ₹108.50/kg

Water, electricity, labour, processing loss and packaging are not included.


⚠️ IMPORTANT QUALITY & SAFETY NOTE

Before commercial production, verify the Castor Oil SAP value and actual NaOH purity because the exact alkali requirement depends on the raw-material specifications. The finished soap base should also be checked for free/residual alkali before incorporation into a commercial product.

This formulation/process is intended for trained manufacturing use. NaOH is highly corrosive and the process should be performed with appropriate PPE and suitable equipment.
